History of DKG International

Dr. Annie Webb Blanton of Austin, Texas, was the founder of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. On May 11, 1929, she and several other women educators founded an honorary Society of outstanding women educators. The objects of the Society were to promote the professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. On August 15, 1929, a charter was granted by the state of Texas; Alpha Chapter in Austin and Alpha State Organization, Texas, were the first to be installed. By 1940, the Society had grown to 392 chapters and 37 state organizations across the United States. Today the Society has grown to approximately 82, 000 members belonging to over 3000 chapters. Chapters are located in Japan, Estonia, Panama, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Iceland, Mexico, Norway, Puerto Rico, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United States of America.

History of DKG Maryland State Organization

On January 30, 1937, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton personally helped to complete the organization of Alpha Beta State in Maryland (now Maryland State Organization). Sixteen Maryland women educators met in Baltimore with Dr. Blanton, and accepted the challenge extended by her to become founders of the Maryland state organization. These women were a representative group of key women whose success in teaching, leadership in professional organizations, and unselfish professional spirit qualified them for membership in this national honorary Society. The women were inspired by Dr. Blanton's dynamic spirit, and their interest and dedication were stimulated by the meaningful purposes of the Society.

The sixteen Maryland founders were: Frances Berry, Mary Caroline Coe, Dr. Esther J. Crooks, Mary Faulkner, Dr. Susan Emolyn Harman, Dr. Louise R. Heath, Mary Ellen Logan, Annette Man, Myrl Marie Mount, Lillian Mary Parker, Olive Reynolds, Annie Louise Ross, Bertha M. Schools, Adelle Hagner Stamp, Clara Parker Sullivan, and Katherine Druse Young. These founders wrote letters, talked to friends, prepared materials, and traveled endless miles organizing chapter after chapter. Today, Alpha Beta State Organization has 795 members in 24 chapters!
