Congrats to Alpha Beta State Scholarship Recipients!
From Sandra L. Rodeheaver:
I am again very appreciative and honored to be chosen to receive a state scholarship from the Maryland state chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. With the help of last year’s scholarship, I was, able to complete my coursework for my doctorate and I am now working diligently on my dissertation in hopes to graduate by December of 2018 with an Ed. D in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on multiculturalism. My sisters in my local chapter have been so supportive and encouraged me to apply again this year for both the state scholarships and our local chapter scholarship. This encouragement has meant a great deal to me as I work to conclude my research and writing.
This scholarship has again relieved financial burdens that are a part of pursuing an advanced degree. I have been able to purchase necessary materials such as books and pay fees necessary to maintain library access through the research process. This past summer I have been able to write another chapter of my dissertation on the theoretical framework of my research. It was the funding from this scholarship that aided in the purchase of some of the necessary materials for the research for that chapter. As I continue my research, my area of focus is still rural Appalachia schools and minority populations, particularly transnationally adopted Asians within this community. My theoretical framework for the study will be Third Space Theory, which will encompass all participants in this study (parents, teachers, and students).
I would like to encourage any member of any chapter of the Maryland State DKG who is pursuing an advanced degree to apply for the scholarship opportunities our state chapter offers us. The application process was easy and everyone, both local and state representatives, are always willing to help with any questions any applicant may have. It has been a great organization to be a part of as I watch our local and state chapters give scholarships to the young ladies who are starting out in the field of education and also to be aware that the organization does so much for its members as they continue to pursue their educational endeavors. I know I will continue to be grateful to this organization.

LOCAL EDUCATOR RECEIVES CORNETET AWARD
Kihara Dorsey, from Columbia, MD, has received a Lucile Cornetet Individual Award for professional development from The Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation. This award will enable Dorsey to attend the International Society for Technology in Education..
Dr. Elsie Gross, Chair of the Educational Foundation Board of Trustees, stated that The Foundation awards approximately $40,000 annually to outstanding educators to enable them to attend professional activities in their respective fields.
“This award will allow me to receive information which will improve my work in the classroom. As an English teacher, I find this very important, incorporating technology in the classroom because all students will have the skills to compete and progress in today’s digital age.” Dorsey said.
A bequest to The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International from the Lucile Cornetet estate was the basis for establishing the Lucile Cornetet Professional Development Fund in 2005. Miss Cornetet, a long-time educator and Society member in Ohio, died in 2001.
The Educational Foundation supports and encourages intercultural understanding and educational excellence. Established in 1964, the Foundation is a non-profit organization located in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Headquarters in Austin, Texas. Established in 1985 by the Maryland Commission for Women and the Women Legislators of Maryland, the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame seeks to honor Maryland women who have made unique and lasting contributions to the economic, political, cultural, and social life of the state and to provide visible models of achievement for tomorrow's female leaders. Each year, an independent committee reviews nominations and selects up to five women for induction into the Hall of Fame. These women are honored in an induction ceremony held during March, Women's History Month. A plaque listing the names of the inductees is on display at the State Law Library in Annapolis. Please select any inductee from the list below to view a biography and image as supplied by the Maryland Commission for Women.

Delta’s 70th Birthday
Many thanks to Sharon Hilty and her committee who planned Delta’s 70th birthday party held at the Willow Tree Inn in Montgomery Village on October 1st.
Dorothy Brown presented a tribute to Mary Armstrong, who has been a member of Delta Chapter for fifty nine years. "Mary had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face as she listened to her tribute."
Gerrie Hawkins presented the “Miss Delta Chapter Award” to Joyce Conway, who is the heart of the chapter. Joyce was so surprised as this type of award had never before been given. She is such a valuable mentor to each new president and is never too busy to answer a question or help with a project.
Gerrie’s beautiful singing of “If I Can Help Somebody, Let it Begin with Me” was truly inspirational. Members were reminded that many of Delta Kappa Gamma’s very worthwhile projects start with one sister’s idea to make a difference in this world.
Roses and certificates were presented to all past presidents, sisters that have been members of Delta for over twenty five years, and Delta’s two mother daughter pairs. Mary Armstrong was given an updated scrapbook.
Jeannie Niebel, violinist, played “The Rose” in honor of the rose being Delta Kappa Gamma’s flower. Beautiful centerpieces were filled with roses. Roses were in abundance at the celebration.
Ray Steven, in-coming Delta President shared her ambitious goals and visions for the chapter’s future.
Delta was honored to have Jean Gray, Cheryl Townshend, Susan Gray, Nadine Roberts, and Lorraine Johnson help celebrate this special time.
A cute poem by Judy Viorst, “I’m Too Young to be Seventy” was read. After reading the poem Jeannie suggested that Delta sisters not be too hard on themselves as they hit specific decades. There are some things that age to perfection. Delta Chapter is certainly an example of this.
