International Information
In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, DKG Society International planned and provided a 2020 DKG Virtual Event Convention for its membership July 7 - 10, 2020. Using the city of Philadelphia as the original site, four spectacular days of professional development, meetings, and exciting events, including the election of officers were featured. Membership had access to all events, and sessions continue to be available for member viewing throughout the year. Several DKG Maryland members took advantage of this opportunity to further learn and grow.
State Information
The DKG Maryland Spring Executive Board meeting was held on March 7th and business was conducted in its usual fashion. One week later, the coronavirus restrictions and quarantine regulations in Maryland prevented the organization from holding its May Leadership Development Conference where the training of presidents and a roundtable for committee chairs are normally held. In order to maintain communication with the membership, DKG Maryland invested in a Zoom account that was made available to its leadership for the purpose of holding
meetings and conducting a variety of tasks and activities. Zoom calls have
become the current method of communication as the inability to have
“face-to-face” contact continues to restrict our interactions. Our September
Executive Board meeting was held via Zoom and was a successful business
meeting which afforded the opportunity for interaction between local members
and those currently residing in other areas of the country who still maintain
membership/contact with the DKG Maryland Organization. A Zoom training
workshop was held in October; a second part is scheduled for December. Dr.
Lace Marie Brodgen, DKG International First Vice President, was the keynote
speaker at the November Leadership Development Conference. Two other
sessions, offered by DKG Maryland members, addressed instructional strategies
for teachers using a virtual and/or hybrid method for instruction.
By the approval of a vote by the Executive Board, the April 2021 State Convention
will be virtual. Plans are being made for the state convention planning committee
to meet and collaboratively create an event which will maintain and celebrate
traditions and address the needs of the current membership. Perhaps the silver
lining to the measures we have had to take to ensure everyone’s safety is that
more members will be able to attend virtually than regularly attend a state
convention.
The First Friday initiative continues in spite of COVID - 19 . DKG Maryland
continues to focus on Maryland’s activities and observable presence in our
communities. Members are encouraged to wear DKG colors and brush up on
their elevator speeches in order to be ready for spontaneous conversation should
the opportunity arise.
We continue to make great strides during this time of loss, illness, uncertainty,
pain, and fear. While membership has shown some decline, we rejoice in the fact
that chapters are welcoming new members and continuing to reach out in their
communities by encouraging teaching staff and assisting however they can.
Chapter leadership continues to embrace the goal of unity(ONE) and promote the
vision, mission and goals of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
COVID-19 has been a teacher. It has forced us to devise other methods of
communicating and interacting with each other. It has caused us to move ahead
in ways we never conceived of before it arrived. And it has shown us that the
DKG Maryland State Organization is composed of some of the brightest and most
creative women in our world. It shows us that we can achieve our vision, mission
and goals in spite of unexpected and devastating situations that could destroy
us, but invigorated and inspired us to achieve.
I am so grateful to each of you for the ONENESS you have shown this year. You
have accomplished so much under very trying conditions and you continue to be
an inspiration as you induct new members, participate in activities, virtually and
via “social distancing,” encourage those of us who are still in the classroom
facing trying situations, and persevere in moving upward. Thank you so much
for all you continue to give and achieve for DKG Maryland State Organization.
Please continue to keep me and Dr. Marilyn Keane,
First Vice President, informed about your chapter
activities. Please send us and newsletter editor Dr. Minnie Young,
a copy of your chapter’s newsletter.
Thank you so
much.

International Information
International took a bold step this year by hosting state presidents and executive secretaries at a meeting in Iowa for training with our International President Cathy Daughtery and other executive members. The president and the executive secretary were provided with information designed to assist them in their positions as many changes were mandated concerning how business would be conducted this biennium. The training was held in Iowa from July 8 - 11, 2019. It allowed state presidents from around the world to mingle and exchange information about their expectations for their incoming positions, as well as encouraging them, as many of them embarked upon unfamiliar leadership territories. The advent of the International Conferences, formerly labeled the Northeast Regional, not only occurred in a variety of locations, but offered a new slant on what would be provided via different conferences: Leadership and Technology(Iowa), Global Awareness(Connecticut), Arts and Humanities(North Carolina), and Professional Research(Iceland). This past summer, 18 DKG Marylanders attended the Global Awareness Conference; two members attended the Professional Research Conference; and four attended the Arts and Humanities Conference. Several members presented workshops.
State Information
In November, the Leadership Development Committee began working towards its upcoming May 2nd conference . Dr. Lace Brodgen, Second International Vice President, will be the keynote speaker. We are delighted to have her join us as she brings greetings from International and speaks at workshops. Other speakers have been suggested and a luncheon speaker will be selected. A three-hour training session will take place for chapter presidents. In addition, a round table will be conducted by the president with committee chairs to learn what progress has been achieved and what problems exist. Our Strategic Action Plan has been completed, sent to chapter presidents, and placed on our website for easy access to the membership. The Bylaws and Standing Rules, with their mandated changes, were
submitted to International. Notification of their approval was given on December 20, 2019. Copies of these revised changes will be given to the executive committee, chapter presidents and other groups. Our website continues to add ongoing information as it occurs to the site and to be more user friendly. New categories of information, such as Bravo and chapter activities, have been added which focus on member achievements and accomplishments. Also, the White Roses, a new column that honors deceased sisters, has been added to our newsletter. The committee is also focusing on encouraging member-creativity via the Gallery of Art. We have many members who submit creative arts works during the convention(Women in the Arts), but are not a part of the International art gallery. DKG Maryland wants to see more members submit their pieces to International.
The Leadership Development Committee has taken the lead in seeking activities that will encourage member participation as well as new member affiliation . . .active, reserved and collegiate.
The First Friday initiative has been reactivated with the hope that additional focus will be placed on DKG Maryland’s activities and presence. Members are encouraged to wear DKG red attire and brush up on their elevator speeches in order to be ready for spontaneous conversation should the opportunity arise.
We continue to make great strides in spite of a decline in the membership We will continue to uphold state traditions as well as create possible new initiatives for the future.
DKG Maryland, as many organizations, is losing members due to a variety of reasons, but chapter leadership, embracing the goal of unity (ONE) continues to promote the goals, vision, and mission of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
I salute each of you for your dedication to DKG Maryland State and encourage you to keep me ([email protected]) and Dr. Marilyn Keane, lst Vice President ([email protected]) , informed about chapter activities. Please send us and our newsletter editor, Dr. Minnie Young, ([email protected]) a copy of your chapter’s newsletter. Thank you so much.
